Election season is in full swing.  We've just a short  15 weeks and 4 days until the General Election and the primary election is August 12.  The DA's race will be on the primary ballot.  The League of Women Voters will be holding a candidate forum this coming Tuesday where you can meet our two competing candidates for DA and learn about the issues in that race, as well as our candidates for County Commissioner.

We need your help to assist our great slate of candidates to their victories in November.  We have many events coming up to reach out to voters including canvassing for the Obama, Udall, Salazar campaigns as well as our local Candidates August 26th and the County Fair starting July 31.  Read below for details on upcoming events.

Special thanks go out to Nan Rowe and Ray Finney for stepping up to run for the BOCC as Democrats.  Both have stepped out of the race leaving us with two great candidates to get elected in November, Clifford Lucero and Ron Chacey.  Beginning last night we started planning our efforts to help these candidates get into office in November.  It's time for a change locally and nationally and we need these two candidates on the BOCC where they can work to make sure that the interests of all of us are placed front and center.

The deadline for registering to vote in the August 12th primary has passed,  If you're not going to be in town though - or just don't want to come to a polling place - you can vote by mail.  The deadline for requesting an absentee ballot to be mailed to you is Tuesday, August 5, 2008.  If you miss that date, you can still pick up an absentee ballot in the County Clerk's office until Friday, August 8, 2008.  You can download a mail-in ballot application (pdf) from the Clerk website here.  In all cases your mail in ballot must be in the clerk's office by 7pm on election day, August 12th.

In breaking news, most of you have heard the County Treasurer Lois Baker has resigned her position effective July 31st.  We will be nominating someone through the vacancy committee to be on the November ballot to run for this position.  The details on how we will run this process have yet to be determined and are mostly dependent upon how many interested and qualified candidates we have to choose from.  If you know a Democrat or are a Democrat who has the financial qualifications to fill this position please email us at candidates@archuletadems.org.  Applications to be nominated to the position by the BOCC are due to the county July 18th at 5pm.

Highway 84 Clean up

Dear trash-packers:

Because of an injury in March and various travels, I have been unable to lead clean-ups of our favorite stretch of U.S. 84 until now. On the assumption that it is in pretty bad shape, I am suggesting a new strategy for attacking the trash next week.

To spread the work among the greatest possible number, I will be leading two clean-ups on Thursday, July 24.  The first will start at 9:00 in the morning, and the second at 4:00 in the afternoon.  And if there is more to be done after that, I will plan another on Saturday morning for those who have work conflicts during the week.

I hope to be able to send teams of at least three to do each section of our adopted highway, and not to ask anyone to work more than one session.  So, if it is at all possible that you can help, please respond with your preference for a time.
As usual, the meeting place for each session will be the access road for the Echo Canyon Reservoir off U.S 84.  Look for my red jeep that will contain collection bags and safety vests.
And as usual, anyone who wants to may gather for cool libations and possibly warmer discussions after each session.  (I am inclined to go to Farrago's, but that is open for discussion.)

So lets get out there and clean up after the you-know-whos.

Jim Cole

Saturday July 26

10am to 1 or 2pm, Canvassing for Obama, Udall and Salazar campaigns, UU Fellowship Hall, Unit B-15 Greenbriar Plaza (From US160 go North on North Pagosa Boulevard.  Drive past the Fire Station, then right onto Greenbriar Drive, around the back of the Greenbriar Plaza, and into the back parking lot. Look for the big sign.)  We'll have a training session led by Mike Kenney of the Colorado Democratic Party and then we'll hit the streets to start identifying voter support amongst sporadic voting Democrats and Unaffiliated voters.  We need your help to start collecting this data for the campaigns so that they can target their outreach efforts as the election quickly approaches.
Thursday July 31 to Aug 3

Archuleta County Fair We'll have our booth space set up again.  We need folks to come out and help staff the booth in two hour shifts.  The fair hours are 3pm to 8pm Thursday, 10am to 8pm Friday and Saturday, and 9:30am to 4pm on Sunday.  We'll need help setting up the booth Thursday at 1pm and breaking it down on Sunday at 4pm.  Please email fair@archuletadems.org if you can help out.  We also need someone to coordinate the booth activities.  If you can help with this please contact Bob at .  We will have materials available at the booth from every campaign that is providing them and will be visited by candidates through the weekend.
